War on drugs: Major source of evils
25 September 2012
Joan Thompson, President, Nassau Institute
Reference is made to the President of the United States listing countries involved in the transportation of illicit drugs into the US. Fathom the hypocrisy of Obama supporting a drug policy that is destroying the social fabric of so many countries while politely chastising the same countries for their failure at interdiction!!! Fathom the hypocrisy of the Chief of Staff, Principal Deputy in the US Secretary of State’s Office of Global Women’s Issues when discussing women’s “rights”, surely aware that US Drug Policy has damaged the lives of the wives, the mothers, the aunts, whole families. In the early 80’s Dr. Milton Friedman, economist and champion for rights and freedoms wrote a letter to a former US President in which he quoted Oliver Cromwell. “I beseech you in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken” – about the course of the US Drug Policy. In the same letter Dr. Friedman referred to measures used to fight the “war on drugs” as the major source of the evils all of us deplore. How many more years will it take for the Imperial Presidency to come to terms with the failure of a drug policy that has effectively destroyed formerly peaceful countries, in thrall of a policy these poor countries cannot change? If there is any “change we can believe in” it is one that takes the criminality out of drug use and treats it as a health problem. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Tradewinds - 29 September 2012 06:11- Hay man.. Its my life, don't tell me what I can't do..
- What is worst Joan, destruction by drug addiction or strict law enforcement and detention?? Both destroy individual families and the lives of individuals.. Drug addiction is rampant in the United States and the Bahamas as well.. To legalize addictive substances can only done be by controlling distribution.. Who will do that the local food stores, drug stores, the private sector or the government?? I can tell you now, it will be the hapless government that can't do anything right.. Bigger government and more inept failure will be the result.. Not a very acceptable solution..
Sadly this is a no win game and what ever method or program that reduces public demand for addictive substances should be pursued aggressively.. We have laws against rape, violence and murder which work as deterrent for sane people.. What we need is intensive and continuous education about the life-threatening effects of habitual drug use.. They are real but are seldom mentioned by the press in columns dealing health and human development.. The medical profession MUST speak out as the real evidence, the truth is overwhelming.. But as I said before, we are dealing with a NO WIN game that destroys lives no matter what you try do.. Perhaps we should follow Nancy Reagan good advise, JUST SAY NO..
