Thought To Ponder

Politicians say they create jobs, but they really don't. Or rather, they rarely create productive jobs. Government has no money of its own. All it does is take resources from one group and give them to another. The pharaohs might have claimed they created work when they ordered that pyramids be built, but think how much richer (and freer) the Egyptians would have been if they'd been allowed to pursue their own interests. It's individuals in the marketplace who create real jobs -- when they have the protection of life and property under the rule of law.

Lawrence W. Reed, president emeritus of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, will discuss the Great Depression and its lessons for policymakers today. Reed’s popular monograph “Great Myths of the Great Depression” explodes conventional thinking about the period and President Franklin Roosevelt’s attempts to improve the economy.

“The history books are full of errors and omissions regarding the true role the federal government played in the Great Depression,” Reed observes. “FDR’s policies did not alleviate the suffering of the 1930s and in many cases made it worse — a legacy we’re still trying to overcome today.”

Reed is president of the nonprofit Foundation for Economic Education and holds an honorary doctorate in public administration from Central Michigan University. The event at CMU is sponsored by the Mackinac Center’s Students for a Free Economy, the CMU Collegiate Forum and the CMU Campus Conservatives. It is open to the public and free of charge.
