Lecture Summary:

In the aftermath of World War II, there was a tremendous amount of global economic instability. Exchange controls were introduced in 1945 as one of a number of initiatives that would help to restore economic stability. In 1979, the UK abandoned exchange controls, but Bahamian policy makers determined that The Bahamas should continue to maintain an exchange control regime.

Dr. Rodgers will make the case that this was a mistake because of the negative impact that exchange controls have had on the Bahamian economy.

Brief Bio:

Dr. Rodgers studied medicine at London University in England and specialised in ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Rodgers became American board certified in 1982, a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons [Canada] and a Felllow of The Royal College of Surgeons [UK] in 1988.

On returning to The Bahamas in 1984, Dr. Rodgers was appointed to the post of Chief of Ophthalmology at The Princess Margaret Hospital and entered private practice the same year.

He has extensively studied Economics and has published 2 books focusing on the Bahamian economy.

Dr Rodgers was the founder of Omni Financial Services which offers a cadre of financial services including money transfers, micro lending, bill payment services, debit cards, cash management and a soon to be launched mobile money platform.
